If you can’t find Mya Grant tearing around the netball court or touch rugby field outside Cromwell College hours, there’s a good chance she’s at work.
Mya has been working at a variety of roles at the Highlands Motorsports Park during 2020 and 2021 , including the cafe, the karts, front-desk reception and at events and functions.
"This has allowed me to communicate and co-ordinate with people of all different ages and nationalities and gain lots of experience doing different multiple jobs," she says.
But that’s not all. Mya’s also keen to show leadership in sport, through coaching and umpiring netball.
Her school Young Enterprise Scheme group this year appointed Mya chief executive for a company selling tea towels with a recycling message.
And she spends time as as a babysitter of twin 4-year-old boys and refereeing junior touch rugby competitions.
Last year, she organised and ran a social volleyball competition in Cromwell, for teams at different year levels attending various schools.
"I made up the draws each week, communicated to the teams on when they were playing, umpired games, played in the competition itself and I was also there each week to clean up and lock up."
She’s a prefect and leader who has served the college student council, sports council and academic committee.
During her five years at the college she has gained numerous diligence and distinction awards, including the Rural Women’s award for top year 11 overall diligence, as well as excellence in both level 1 and level 2 NCEA.
Mya is thinking about enrolling in business management at the University of Otago in 2022.
"I want to get a good degree and get a good job. But I have no major plans. I am just taking things day by day. An excellence endorsement is my main goal this year," she said.

Cromwell College head boy Joshua Hancock wants an adventurous career.
He has had many academic and sporting achievements at school.
He has also earned awards from St John Youth during his more than 100 hours of service with the Cromwell Cadets.
Last year, he attended a Burnham Defence Careers Experience course and he
plans to pursue a career in the navy.
His call to action was sparked by a peer.
His role model is George Glover, who he met at Outward Bound last year.
"Last year he was the head boy for Marlborough Boys’ College.
"He just really inspired me because he’s a really confident leader and has done a lot of charity work, especially in mental health. It has inspired me to take more action ... with St John.
"I want to go into the defence force next year. I would like to do some work in New Zealand, then deploying overseas would be pretty cool," he says.
Joshua is a sergeant/cadet leader in training and the highest ranking cadet in Cromwell’s youth division.
He competes at St John competitions and was team leader of one of the South Island teams at the nationals this year.
Fellow trainees on the Spirit of Adventure 2021 voted him their captain.
He loves the outdoors and has just one more tramp to do to achieve the gold Duke of Edinburgh Hillary Award.
He took part in the Model European Union Parliament in 2018 and 2021.
He’s completed 20 hours of community service for the home and school committee (2020-21), was a founding member of Cromwell College’s academic and environmental committees (2021) and was on this year’s formal committee.
