Haast Pass will be open to all next week with the scheduled convoys disappearing, but it is going to take some time before the highway is back to normal.
The highway was shut on September 22 because of a slip at Muddy Creek, near the Blue Pools, and traffic was then let through by convoy last week.
Waka Kotahi NZ Transport Agency yesterday said stop-go traffic management would be introduced from Monday.
Good progress was made removing material from Muddy Creek, and from Monday a short section of highway would have a stop-go traffic management system, and the convoy process would not be used.
Traffic signals would continue to be used after 4.30pm.
More work needed to be done as there was concern more closures were possible.
Thousands of cubic metres of material had been deposited all around the creek bed.
On either side of the highway surrounding the bridge, the material was between 1m and 3m higher than the road itself.
The creek needed to be deepened to carry water away swiftly.
Waka Kotahi was investigating ways to get as much early warning as possible that the creek was rising and/or land was moving.
That might include a temporary weather station at Camerons Flat as well as a river-level monitor at Muddy Creek bridge.
Appropriate warning signs and temporary speed restrictions were also needed.
Work would be under way in the Muddy Creek area for several weeks to come, the agency said.
