Thousands of people have once again gathered in Spain for 'La Tomatina' - the world’s biggest food fight.

About 150,000kg of tomatoes were transported to Bunol, west of the Spanish city of Valencia, for the festival.

The event can not start until someone climbs a greased pole in the town square to bring down a ham.

About 20,000 people spent almost an hour hurling the ripe-red fruit at each other until the narrow street that is home to the festival ran red with pulp.

The festival started about 1945, but its origins are cloudy.

Some reports suggest it started as a food fight among friends, but others say it was a protest against the city council or the aftermath of an accidental truck spillage.
