Surf Life Saving New Zealand Otago and Southland club support officer Sam Clutterbuck said lifeguards from the six clubs in Otago and Southland were collecting yesterday.
"All the donations collected get split among the clubs and go towards funding new rescue equipment to keep our beaches safer over the summer. It is also a good chance to inform the public we are now out patrolling the beaches every weekend over summer and then every day from December 19."
