A young patient at Auckland's Starship Hospital has been rescued after getting stuck in a ceiling.

Fire and Emergency northern shift manager Scott Osmond said the alarm was raised at 8am today after the child was discovered trapped in a ceiling cavity in the high-rise paediatric hospital.

He said the child was believed to have spent the entire night trapped there.

Mr Osmond was unable to say which ward or floor it was, or give the child's age and gender.

Fire crews had left the hospital by 9.30am.

Mr Osmond referred all further comment on the incident to the Auckland District Health Board.

The board had yet to respond to inquiries.
