A young man has died in Wellington Hospital after he was hit by a van while he was walking along State Highway 1 on the Kapiti Coast early today.
The man, in his late teens or early 20s, was walking north of Waikanae when the accident happened about 1.45am, Sergeant Ian Osland of Kapiti police said.
Police believe they now know his identity but will not be releasing his name until next of kin have been advised.
He was wearing a white patterned hooded zip front surf style fleece lined jacket, a blue baseball cap, blue jeans and a pair of black and grey camouflage patterned Globe shoes. He appeared to be of European descent and of medium build.
Mr Osland said the driver and passenger of the Mitsubishi van involved in the incident were shaken, but not injured.
Police would like to hear from any motorists travelling through the area about the time of the accident who may have seen the man, or driven through the scene prior to emergency services arriving.
