A digger sits idle on top of the rubble from old Tomahawk School (left), which was demolished earlier this week.

The Andersons Bay Community Kindergarten had planned to move to the Dunedin City Council-owned site and was given a 20-year lease, but pulled out in 2017 because of the condition of the buildings.

The dental building, pergola and concrete pad will stay in place and the grounds will be grassed over.

There will be community consultation later this year on what to do with the site.

Otago Peninsula Community Board chairman Paul Pope said the demolition was a bittersweet moment for many in the Tomahawk community but the building had become too derelict to save.

A meeting will be held at the Ocean Grove Recreation Hall next Thursday at 5.30pm, where a list of community proposals for the redevelopment of the hall will be discussed.
