Athletics: NZ's Hamblin fails to make 800m semis

Nikki Hamblin won't look back on the world athletics championships with any fondness after she failed to qualify for the 800m semifinals.

The Cambridge runner fell in her 1500m heat earlier in the week in Daegu, South Korea, and fell behind in the final stages of today's 800m heat to finish fifth - the top four from each race progressed automatically.

She looked comfortable in the home straight, settling into third, but was overwhelmed in the last 10m by two fast-finishing competitors.

Her time of 2:02.87 also wasn't quick enough to count as one of the fastest losers.

Jake Robertson was 12th in his heat of the 5000m and 24th fastest overall in a time of 13:53.57. Adrian Blincoe had also been due to run in the 5000m but was forced to withdraw after sustaining an injury while training in the village earlier in the week.
