A big effort has brought even bigger rewards for the Franklin Bulls.
Four months after being granted provisional entry to the 2021 national basketball league, it has been confirmed the new franchise will enter the 2020 league.
The franchise, based just south of Auckland, was given a set of requirements to complete prior to gaining entry to the 2021 league. But it has moved quickly and will be ready for next year.
It has shown determination from the beginning, updating social media daily and including fans in decisions such as the mascot and team name.
NBL general manager Justin Nelson said that had been a big part in the outcome.
"The Bulls have hit the ground running. There is no doubt about that," Nelson said.
"Behind the scenes they have focused on resources and skill sets, which are two of the most vital ingredients you have to get right in a sports business.
"We're very mindful of timing and the league will help the Bulls over the coming months get up to speed, but this is a very exciting development for what is an extremely passionate basketball community."
He added that it was good to have a team near Auckland, although it would still seek another team in the city.
"To be relevant and legitimate, we needed a better presence in the greater Auckland region and we believe the Bulls will bring good things to the league.
"Our focus is now on a second team in central Auckland, hopefully as soon as season 2021.
Franklin's entry brings the teams in next year's league to eight, after the Southern Huskies and Supercity Rangers withdrew following the 2019 season.
The Otago Nuggets retain provisional entry to the 2021 league.
