An elderly woman escaped injury when the car she was sitting in suddenly accelerated forward into the concrete block wall of the Mornington Countdown supermarket in Dunedin yesterday.
Police said the woman unintentionally pushed down on the accelerator of the car while she reached around to the back seat about 3.15pm.
The car went forward, and punched a Hyundai Getz-sized hole in the wall.
Shoppers inside the supermarket reported hearing a loud bang and seeing a shelf of plastic drink bottles go flying.
