Australian man killed in West Coast crash

An elderly Australian man died after in a car accident on the West Coast overnight.

Police say the 72-year-old, from Adelaide, was the sole occupant of a car that appeared to have collided with the entrance to a single lane bridge over the Manakaiua River about 20km south of Fox Glacier.

The car ended up in the river.

The accident was discovered by a passing motorist about midnight and the man was found deceased.

Police say road conditions at the time were wet, but not icy.

An in quiry is under way and the matter has been referred to the Coroner.
