A stargazing tourist was struck and killed by a car driven by a Queenstown resident returning home from work on Tuesday night.
The 50-year-old Korean tourist, Daegeun Yun, died at the scene, outside the Swiss-Belresort Coronet Peak hotel, after telling his wife he was going outside to look at the stars.
Senior Constable Chris Blackford said the man was part of a Korean tour group staying at the Arthur's Point hotel.
''Initial indications are that he was standing on the roadway near the fog line [white line on the side of the road]'', Snr Const Blackford said.
Mr Yun was wearing dark clothing, consisting of a ''black jacket and black trousers''.
A witness who was driving behind the vehicle which collided with Mr Yun, about 10.15pm, and a firefighter who was in the area performed CPR ''but were unable to revive the deceased''.
An ambulance also attended but Mr Yun was pronounced dead at the scene at 10.43pm.
His body would be transported to Christchurch for a postmortem before being returned to Korea.
An investigation into the accident would be carried out and Snr Const Blackford said members of the CIB were involved ''but the initial indications are that he was in a dark area with dark clothing''.
It was believed the tourist, after being struck by the vehicle ''must have been thrown and his head has struck the ground, but we won't know the cause of death until the postmortem has been completed''.
The tour group is expected to leave Queenstown today.
