Retailers and shoppers are being urged to to keep a close eye on any $50 or $100 notes they receive after a fake $100 was used to purchase a coffee at an Auckland supermarket.

North Shore police are trying to identify a man seen on CCTV footage after a fake $100 note was used to pay for a coffee at a Pak'nSave supermarket on Tuesday.

It's the third time since late October that a fake note had been used on the North Shore, police said.

Police urged retailers and shoppers to keep a close eye on any $50 or $100 notes they may receive.

A fake $50 note was used to pay for goods at a North Shore butcher shop just before Christmas, and in late October a fake $50 was used at a Glenfield clothing shop.

A-21 year-old woman was charged with misuse of a document in relation the Glenfield incident and enquiries to establish where the note originated from were continuing.

Police had yet to determine whether the cases were linked, Constable Simon Hooker said.

"If you're receiving a large denomination of money, take a look closely at the notes. If the paper feels odd or it just doesn't look right, contact the police," he said.
