Injured woman airlifted after West Coast fall

A Scottish woman's moonlight walk on a rocky and remote West Coast beach ended in a five-hour ordeal after she fell 5m and broke her femur.

The woman had been with a partner for a walk on Murphys Beach, north of Knights Point, Haast, about 9.30pm on Sunday, when she fell on the rocks. Her partner then had to leave her and walk out to call for help.

With the NZCC Rescue Helicopter busy on a job in Westport, a Queenstown helicopter had to be called in, landing on the beach and finally airlifting the woman out at 2am. She was flown to Dunedin for medical attention.
