Two Invercargill students continue to fight for their lives in hospital following a crash in Southland yesterday which injured seven.
The collision between a campervan and a car took place on the Athol Five Rivers Highway at 4.15pm, when the campervan turned right from State Highway 6 on to State Highway 97, heading towards Mossburn.
One of the vehicles caught fire, with a person trapped inside as emergency services worked to cut them free. The person were later flown to Kew Hospital in Invercargill with serious injuries.
The campervan was carrying two adults and and two children, believed to be German.
The car, a 1993 Mitsubishi station wagon, was carrying two Southern Institute of Technology students and another passenger.
One of the German children was treated at hospital, while the others in the campervan were treated at the scene.
The two students were flown to Dunedin Hospital with serious injuries, including possible leg injuries and burns.
They were the only two from the crash to remain in hospital today, police said, with life threatening injuries.
The police serious crash unit was still investigating the smash, and the cause was not yet known, senior sergeant Brian Benn of the Southern District Command Centre said.
