A children's disco, an organ recital and a walk down memory lane will all be part of the coming celebrations of St Luke’s Anglican Church 160th anniversary celebrations next month.

One of the most celebrated churches in Oamaru and the first in the district to be built from Oamaru stone, the category one historic place was erected in three stages from 1865 to 1913.

St Luke’s Anglican Church vicar the Rev Dr Andrea McDougall said it was "great" to celebrate such a milestone in the history of the church.

"I’m looking forward to reconnecting with parishioners from here and other parts of the country.

"I am quite moved to think of all the people that have been part of the church’s history over the last 160 years and before the church was established here, who have come together in worship," Dr McDougall said.

Church committee member and head organiser Gillian Lynch said the celebrations will take place over the weekend of October 18-19 and will include a meet and greet on the Saturday with historic displays and a catered dinner open to the public, for $50 per person, in the church hall.

"The weekend before we start the celebrations with a children’s disco party, because we don’t want to leave the kids out."

On Sunday there will be an organ recital in the church by Dr Ron Newton at 9.45am and then a celebratory church service that starts at 10.30am, followed by a finger food lunch in the hall afterwards, she said.
