A local farmer inadvertently helped a pair of car thieves when he pulled the stolen Subaru they were driving from a Saddle Hill ditch yesterday.
Senior Sergeant Liz Waru said the black Subaru Legacy was stolen from a Thorn St address in Caversham about 8am and crashed on Mcmasters Rd about 5pm.
"A farmer helped get [the car] out of the ditch and on its way again,'' Snr Sgt Waru said.
"The car is in pretty bad shape.''
The farmer took a photo of the car but only found out it was stolen after deciding to report the crash to police.
Reporting the crash was likely "an after thought'' by the farmer, Snr Sgt Waru said.
Police have yet to locate the two women, aged in their early 20s, or the car but are following positive lines of inquiry.
