The American forward has been cut seven games into the season.
Coach Jeff Sparrow had high hopes for the 28-year-old.
‘‘He can put it on the floor, he can shoot it, he can pass it, he can drive it,’’ Sparrow said shortly after the franchise confirmed his playing contract.
‘‘He just does a little bit of everything offensively.’’
Sparrow now concedes he made a mistake recruiting Henn, who has struggled to make an impact at either end of the court.
‘‘We really were looking for somebody to just shoot a high volume of threes, and I think that evaluating him, we probably made a mistake in terms of his overall skill set,’’ Sparrow said.
‘‘He’s more of a player who wants to put it on the ground, a playmaker, a facilitator.
‘‘We just needed somebody to spot up and shoot. He just didn’t fit exactly what we were trying to do.’’
Basketball is a brutal business and cutting someone from the squad is always a tough conversation.
‘‘Listen, I love him as a person. I think he’s a great guy, super coachable, and he’s been here since March 9, so he took it hard as he should because he cares and he’s invested.
‘‘It’s part of the business. He understands that. He has my blessing and recommendation for whatever his next endeavour is, you know what I mean?
‘‘But just at this level in this league, and the way we’re built, we made a bit of an error there in assessing [him].’’
Last season, the Nuggets cut Jose Perez after 12 games. The difference is this time the Nuggets intend to replace Henn in the squad.
A player announcement is expected later this week.
Sparrow said the decision to let Henn go was unrelated to the disappointing news this week that Jonathan Janssen was unable to take up his playing contract due to injury.
The Nuggets made a positive start to the season. They posted four consecutive wins, which partly masked the issues the team was facing.
But they have lost their past three games and that has caused them to look inward.
They are still well-placed, but the decision to make a change signals they are not prepared to let the season slide and a playoff spot slip away.
Their next assignment is against the Nelson Giants in Nelson on Sunday afternoon.
