Golden weekend in Queensland for Piebenga, Scott

Olivia Piebenga and Millie Scott had a weekend to remember.

The Dunstan Arm and University of Otago rowers collected triple gold at the Oceania under-22 teams championships in Queensland.

Piebenga and Scott, who were representing the South Island as part of a 24-strong New Zealand team, had a dominant win in the women’s double scull, finishing in 7min 31.21sec, nearly 7sec ahead of their closest competitors.

They were then part of a New Zealand composite crew, alongside Jemima Glaholm and Lucy Gaston (both Waikato), who won the women’s quad scull in 6min 55.53sec.

The Otago rowers rounded out their championships with another dominant win in the mixed eight alongside Glaholm, Gaston and Waikato rowers Sasha Robinson, Angalla Carney, Ellyce Smith and Pippa Dixon in 6min 16.90sec.

Among the other Otago rowers representing the South Island were Dunstan men Harry Lightfoot and Matt O’Meara, who also represents Lincoln University. The won silver in the men’s double in 6min 38.21sec.

They joined Patrick Spillane (Oamaru/University of Otago) and Luke Brock (Dunstan/University of Otago) to collect silver in the men’s quad in 6min 3.51sec.

Brock finished fourth in the men’s single scull in 7min 24.82sec, and Harrison Thode and Seb Watson (Dunstan/University of Canterbury) joined Alfred Eadie (Auckland/University of Canterbury), Zac Jenkins (Wairau/University of Canterbury) and cox Eliza O’Meagher (Avon) to place fourth in the men’s coxed four in 6min 27.46sec.
