The Playhouse Theatre is gearing up to celebrate 150 years of music and laughter next month with a ‘‘Grand Old Music Hall’’ show.

Dunedin audiences would be invited to step back in time for a glittering evening of song, comedy and nostalgia celebrating this milestone, a Playhouse spokesperson said in a statement.

Staged by the Dunedin Repertory Society, ‘‘The Grand Old Playhouse Music Hall’’ will mark the 150th anniversary of the Playhouse Theatre building, which opened on May 24, 1876, as a lodge of the Independent Order of Odd Fellows.

Inspired by the British music hall tradition, which was popular at the time, the show will feature a mix of comic songs, sketches and rousing choruses.

The Grand Old Playhouse Music Hall will feature top Dunedin performers, including Bridget Telfer Milne, Arlie McCormack, Harriet Moir, James Adams and Darrel Read.

They will take the stage dressed in some of the society’s most special costumes.

The Grand Old Playhouse Music Hall season, which will run June 12-14, will double as a fundraiser to help secure the future of the theatre.

The Grand Old Playhouse Music Hall will be held at 7.30pm on June 12 and 13, and 2pm on June 14. Tickets are available via www.playhousetheatre.co.nz
