The competition is New Zealand’s largest and longest-running youth music event for secondary schools and over 20 students from Invercargill will be taking part this year.
Audiences would experience the music-making process and ensemble performances of classical, contemporary and original arrangements, district contest organiser Trinity Waddell said.
“The NZCT Chamber Music contest continues to play an important role in the musical lives of young people throughout New Zealand.”
This would be the 61st year of the contest, which had aided in “fostering confidence, collaboration and excellence”, she said.
More than 1500 students country-wide will be participating this year across a range of instruments including piano, strings, percussion, electric and bass guitars.
The district round of the competition is at 6pm on Thursday and is open to the public. Admission is free.
The best groups from Invercargill will move on to the Southern regional finals in Christchurch on June 27.
