A "post-modern castle" in Canterbury that appeared on Grand Designs New Zealand in 2022 is on the market.

The Mediterranean-inspired home on McLeods Rd in Sefton is named Bella Castello and was built by Phil Metaxas and architect Philip Kennedy, OneRoof.co.nz reported.

New Zealand Sotheby's International Realty listing agent Matthew Rayner told OneRoof Metaxas had done a quality job.

"You can see he has spent a lot of money on it. I never saw [the property] when it was listed last time. But now it's finished - all painted, all floored, all glazed.

"I don't know if I could pick one [favourite feature]. Because you've got the Mediterranean look, then you have the spiral staircase and the towers. There's just a lot to it," Rayner told OneRoof.

The price is by negotiation but OneRoof reported it has hit the market for sale with its sights set on a buyer with about $6 million to spend.

Metaxas told OneRoof in 2023 the project would end up costing “in excess of $1 million” and that replacement costs were around $12m.

Bella Castello has five bedrooms, five bathrooms, multiple living areas, an internal courtyard, a generous kitchen and a formal dining room. It sits on 4.31 ha.

It also has a two-bedroom, two-bathroom apartment. The 1170sq m floor plan runs over four levels from the wine cellar in the basement to the top tower.
