Cricket: Australia out for quick wickets

Australia will aim to make a swift kill of South Africa's first innings on day three of the second cricket Test at the MCG.

The Proteas will resume on 7-198, still 196 runs behind Australia and with a long way to go to get close to the home side's first-innings 394.

Needing a win to level the series at 1-1, Australia will aim to wrap up the tourists' innings and then begin building a match-winning lead.

However they will be mindful of South Africa's ability to chase big totals, following the Proteas' brilliant pursuit which earned them victory in the first Test in Perth.

The tourists have conceded they have it all to do to either save or win this match, but they can draw inspiration from the way Australia's tail has batted well in three completed innings this series.

That means Jean-Paul Duminy, the last of the specialist batsmen, will have an enormous job when he resumes on 34, with only Paul Harris (six not out) and the two remaining tailenders to come.

Sunday also looms as a massive day for Australia's out-of-sorts veterans.

Paceman Brett Lee will be keen to get among the wickets after missing out on Saturday.

Lee's series figures stand at 1-200.

Opening batsman Matthew Hayden will also be keen to atone for a poor start, following scores of 12, four and eight this series.

The stars for Australia on day two were Michael Clarke, who finished unbeaten on 88, and paceman Peter Siddle, who contributed a handy 19 with the bat and then took 3-24 before his home crowd to put his side in control.
