Juggling so many balls in the air is one of Olivia Bates' greatest challenges but her passion for netball, volleyball and basketball will not stand in the way of her goal of becoming a secondary school teacher.

This year, the 17-year-old Otago Girls High School sports prefect is a member of the New Zealand Netball under-17 Talent ID squad (2006-08), Otago Premier A Netball, Otago under-21 Netball, South Island Secondary Schools Volleyball and Otago under-19 Volleyball teams.

Last year she was a member of the Otago NPC Netball B team and was a reserve for Basketball New Zealand's tour to Australia in 2006.

As well as representing Otago in these disciplines since 2005, Olivia has also managed to represent the region in cricket and tennis.

Olivia says one of her crowning achievements to date was being selected for the Otago Premier A netball team which won the New Zealand Lois Muir Netball Challenge this year.

Although much of her week is spent bouncing from one court to another, she is determined her sporting career will not come at the cost of her education.

"Education is very important. Without it, I will have nothing to fall back on after my sporting career is finished."

She plans to study physical education at the University of Otago and become a secondary school teacher while netting a place in the Silver Ferns.

Achievements: 1st NZ Age-Group Tournament with Otago under-21 team (2008); Otago NPC triallist (2008); Blues Awards in basketball and netball (2006); school senior A netball, basketball, volleyball and touch rugby teams (2005-08); school junior sportswoman of the year (2005); Otago Premier A Netball team which won the New Zealand Lois Muir Netball Challenge.

Role model: Former Silver Fern Belinda Colling.

Hopes for the future: To become a secondary school teacher and a Silver Fern.
