Black ice warning for region

Black ice warnings are in place throughout the Queenstown-Lakes and Central Otago districts after freezing overnight temperatures.

Areas around Queenstown and Arrowtown were expected to be especially affected by black ice this morning, including through the Kawarau Gorge, SH85 in the Wedderburn area, over the Lindis Pass and Crown Range, through  Cardrona and around Wanaka.

The Queenstown-Lakes District Council said grit had been applied to “all problem areas.”

“Take extra care right through until well after daybreak, especially in shaded areas and over bridge decks. Reduce your speed and leave extra space between the car in front.”

Central Otago has “mixed conditions” this morning, with both wet and dry roads.

New Zealand Transport Agency has black ice warnings for Cromwell to Frankton (SH6) and Tarras to Omarama (SH8).

There are still a number of road closures in place across the district.

Reef Rd is at the ford.
