A record amount of $27,000 was raised at last year's sale.
Beginning on Boxing Day in Alexandra, the five-day sale is a holiday institution, and it attracts visitors and locals eager to invest in reading material.
This year's sale will be staged in a new venue, the Alexandra Community Centre. Convener Ken Cook said 80 boxes of donated books and magazines had been unpacked and were stacked on tables in two rooms of the centre.
"We hope to hit the $25,000 mark this year. We'd be happy with that," he said.
It is the 24th year of the sale, which has been based in St Enoch's Church Hall on Centennial Ave for the past decade. The hall will be demolished at the end of next month to make way for the Alexandra Community House complex and the construction site is fenced off.
Mr Cook said "every cent" of the proceeds would be used for charitable purposes, supporting a range of community projects.
The sale has raised more than $372,000 over the years.
"We rely on the holidaymakers, as well as the good support we get from the locals, so we hope they all have no trouble finding us in our new location," he said.
