62,500 reasons to attend meeting on amenity fund

Decisions on how to spend a $62,500 amenity fund from L and M Mining could be made at a public meeting in Earnscleugh next month.

The mining company was required to deposit the money into a Central Otago District Council account for use in the Earnscleugh area as a condition of it gaining resource consents to mine in that area.

L and M Mining plans to extract more than 110,000 ounces of gold from the Earnscleugh flats.

It began groundwork last June and started mining in December.

A meeting was held at Earnscleugh in September to discuss possible ways of using the fund and who should be involved in making such decisions.

Fourteen people attended and suggestions included picnic areas, a swimming dam and an upgrade for the district hall.

The Vincent Community Board has organised the May 12 meeting and chairwoman Clair Higginson hoped a good cross-section of the district would be represented.

"The last time we had a meeting, I think the people who were there were conscious that a wider cross-section of the community was needed to decide on how the funds should be spent, " she said.

It was important that the district's residents had their say on how the money was spent and distributed.

"Decisions might be made at this May meeting.

"If that's what the meeting decides, then we can work out how the money is to be allocated. Or the people at the meeting might think those decisions can be left to a group of the right people," Ms Higginson said.

The money is already in a council account.
