Celebrating their titles in the Alexandra Blossom Festival senior queens competition are winner Raelene Cavanagh (left) and runner-up Susan Rowsell.

The crowning was the highlight of an afternoon celebrating the community contribution of the five entrants.

Mrs Cavanagh was described by the Friendship Network, which nominated her, as as someone who quietly served others in the community by delivering meals and baking as well as taking people to social outings.

Mrs Rowsell was nominated by Niamh O’Docherty, who was the princess on the float from Mrs Rowsell’s business Eat Humble Pie.

She was always cooking and delivering meals, giving away morning tea shouts and supporting those at Living Options, her nomination read.

After the senior queens and prince and princess contestants were introduced the huge audience at the Alexandra District Club enjoyed a fashion parade and afternoon tea following the crowning.

The senior queens event was the first official event of the blossom festival, which continues all week, culminating in the street parade and Party in the Park on Saturday and garden tour on Sunday.
