A man has been charged with attempted murder after he allegedly tried to drive his van, with a passenger, into Lake Dunstan.

A 20-year-old German man will appear in Queenstown District Court on Thursday after he allegedly attempted to drive his van into the lake at Italian Creek in Cromwell Gorge.

Police said the vehicle was stopped after its front wheel became caught in the crash barrier at 8pm on January 22.

After the incident, a black car heading towards Alexandra from Cromwell stopped and gave the driver of the crashed vehicle a ride, police said.

Police said they were looking to talk to the driver of the black car who was at the scene and anyone else who may have witnessed the incident.

The police were also looking for information from anyone who may have seen a 1997 white Toyota Liteace van driving in the Cromwell Gorge at that time.

Anyone with information in relation to the incident is asked to contact Detective Gary Hyndman, of the Cromwell Police, on (03) 445-1999.

Information can also be shared anonymously via Crimestoppers on 0800 555-111.
