When bidders raise their hands at a Roxburgh charity auction tonight, helping a 9-year-old local boy’s cancer recovery will be on their minds.

Caleb Darling was diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukaemia in July.

He and his family  returned home last week from Christchurch, where he had been receiving treatment.

The town is holding a fundraising auction at the Roxburgh Rugby Club tonight.

Doors  open  at 6pm.

The event will include supper and a Roxburgh Area School kapa haka performance.

Co-organiser Carly Bennetts  said a couple from Mosgiel drove to Roxburgh with a car filled with wooden toys they had  made and dropped them at the local pharmacy for the auction.

"They wouldn’t give their name or anything, but it was a huge amount of items."

Caleb wanted money from some of the items to go to the Child Cancer Foundation, she said.

"He wants to give back as well."

More than 60 items will be auctioned, including a 2015 Rugby World Cup winner’s jersey signed by the All Blacks  and coaching and management staff.

It was donated by adidas.

The jersey will be offered at auction  and  will be put on Trade Me if the reserve is not reached.

A signed Highlanders jersey will also be auctioned.Caleb’s  father, Craig Darling, said his son was "responding well to treatment".

"He’s pretty tough. He’s doing as well as can be expected."

The support of the community was "absolutely amazing", he said.

"This will last about three years — about six months of that will be intense treatment. This [support] is going to make life much easier for us."

A Givealittle page created on Caleb’s  behalf closed last week after generating $11,600.

Other money has been raised through various raffles and fundraisers throughout the town.
