Warning signs have been placed at both ends of the Cromwell Gorge by Waka Kotahi NZ Transport Agency to warn motorists about the potential danger of wandering wildlife during winter migration.
Waka Kotahi Central Otago senior network manager Robert Choveaux said the culprits were mainly goats.
"It is the seasonal migration of various wildlife — goats, largely — and it catches numerous people off guard."
Last year, wild goats were hit by emergency response vehicles in two separate road incidents just hours apart.
Those incidents prompted the move, Mr Choveaux said.
He said the animals were unlikely to be wandering stock.
"We used the term wildlife on the signs as ‘stock’ suggests sheep or cows and we want people to be aware it may not be a domestic or farm animal."
The signs are in place on State Highway 8 near the Deadman’s Point Bridge at Cromwell and the other is near Clyde.
