An Alexandra St John Youth cadet was commended for reaching two significant milestones during his time with the organisation last August.

Cadet corporal Corey Miller was presented the Grand Prior award for completing the cadet programme by Doug Dance, a Commander of the Order of St John, on August 27.

The 17-year-old was also recognised for achieving 1000 hours of volunteer work, the highest a cadet could achieve.

"I have helped out in many different ways, I’ve helped out with blossom festivals, running camps, helping out at camps, doing heaps of different things."

Corey said he was thrilled to receive the recognitions, after the hard work he had put into the organisation.

The Grand Prior award was a big one, as not many cadets achieved the milestone, he said.

At age 6 and wanting to follow his sisters who were also cadets, he joined St John in 2014.

As he progressed through the cadet programme, he enjoyed the activities and helping others, he said.

Corey also found working with others to be quite fulfilling and considered his fellow cadets to be family.

As a cadet corporal, Corey would teach and help out the younger cadets during their parade nights.

Now that he had finished the cadet programme himself, he hoped to continue with St John and become an adult member to keep helping and passing on his knowledge to others.

"My aim is to help out and teach all the younger ones so then they can get through the programme as well."

With next year being Corey’s final year at Dunstan High School, he hoped to finish school and learn to become a nurse.

It was during his time at St John he discovered he wanted to take up nursing, he said.
