Otago rural traffic police are stepping up a campaign against motorists engaging in the dangerous practice of cutting corners and crossing the centre line.
The Otago Rural Highway Patrol has set up cameras at four traffic hotspots, where motorists often flout road rules during their cornering manoeuvres.
Camera stations and checkpoints have been established in the Kawarau, Cromwell, and Manuka Gorges, and on the Milford road.
Otago rural highway patrol chief officer Sergeant Cameron Sigley said motorists who were filmed committing corner cutting offences were stopped at a checkpoint and issued with a $150 fine.
The dangerous practice was illegal and could result in serious or fatal accidents, he said.
Offences were committed by an average of 13 motorists an hour and were split ‘‘fairly evenly'' between tourists and local residents, Sgt Sigley said.
