Low and no-expense election campaigns are the feature of candidates' spending details the Central Otago District Council returning officer has received so far.
Kara Leckie said many people standing for the council or boards did not spend anything, as no elections were needed for the seats on the council other than the mayoralty or the Vincent and Roxburgh Community Boards.
The new Mayor, Tony Lepper, of Earnscleugh, spent $1988.98, while mayoral candidate Jeff Hill, of Alexandra, who polled second in the mayoral race, spent $2601.41. Former mayor Malcolm Macpherson had yet to supply spending details, Mrs Leckie said.
Of those candidates standing for the Cromwell Community Board, Murray MacMillan spent $122.34, Nigel McKinlay spent $65.81, while David Tod and Helen Hucklebridge spent $37.97.
Of those four, only Mr Tod was not elected. Glen Christiansen, the highest-polling candidate for the Cromwell Community Board, did not spend any money on his campaign.
Maniototo Community Board candidate Diane Paterson spent $142.20 on her successful campaign. Of the other candidates, Stuart Duncan is yet to supply details while the other candidates did not spend anything on their campaigns.
Candidates have until December 10 to provide campaign spending details. Central Otago District Council mayoral candidates' spending could not exceed $14,000.
