The oldest athletes were only a few years shy of their 100th birthdays, but fierce competition was still evident at the 19th annual Central Super Masters Games in Alexandra yesterday.

The event attracted more than 40 competitors from rest-homes in Cromwell, Alexandra, Roxburgh and Queenstown. Activities ranged from quoits through to Velcro darts, golf putting and a basketball throw.

Sport Otago instigated the event, with the aim of encouraging the elderly to become more active. A group of about 10 volunteers are involved behind the scenes.

Liz Pratt, a member of the organising committee, said the games were always eagerly anticipated by rest-home residents.

Activities co-ordinator at Wakatipu Home Donna Walsh said the Wakatipu team had been practising for a while.

"They enjoy this and it's a real highlight for them to take part."

The oldest athletes competing yesterday were Alexandra's Castlewood Rest Home residents Glad Sinnamon (98) and Jack Ingram(97).
