The Christmas spirit is growing in Alexandra as decorations are put up in an initiative by the town's promotions group.

Group secretary and project manager Martin McPherson and Murray Anderson yesterday put up the largest of the decorations, Santa in his sleigh pulled by reindeer, on the roof of a building visible to people entering the town from the bridge.

This week, 36 more decorations of trees, santas and presents will be added to lampposts in busy areas.

Mr McPherson said the idea followed comments from residents who said there was ''a lack of Christmas feel to the town''.

''Last year we had banners but no real decorations.''

The group is also encouraging retailers to decorate their shops.

The $6000 project was funded by grants from the Vincent Community Board and in time and effort by G. K. Anderson Engineering Ltd.

The decorations are expected to be able to be used for 10 years.

The group will add to the collection next year.
