Deputy principal Barb Lambeth looks over Patrick Smit's work at Clyde Primary School - officially one of the best schools at which to teach.

The school yesterday received an inaugural ''Great Spaces for Teachers'' award, including a cheque for $1000, Clyde Primary principal Doug White said.

''It's a bit of a feather in the cap, really.''

It was awarded by the New Zealand Council for Educational Research following a teacher survey.

It asked teachers about their physical working environment, resources, school leadership and opportunities for professional development, council general manager products and services Graeme Cosslet said.

He said about 1500 teachers from around the country responded to the survey.

While the survey had been going for about five years, this was the first year the council had run it as a competition, he said.

Clyde Primary won the award for small school, Tolaga Bay Area School won the mid-sized school section and Tauranga Boys' College won the large school category.
