While the Big Cheese and the Bottomless Pit have been put forward as names for Cromwell’s new civic building, odds are an altogether different suggestion will prevail following today’s Cromwell Community Board meeting.

More than 600 people made submissions on the name for the nearly complete facility on the banks of the Kawarau River in Cromwell.

It is due to open in July.

Replacing the Cromwell Memorial Hall, the $45million building has been known as the Cromwell Memorial Hall and Events Centre during construction.

The board had earlier recommended dual names — one English and a gifted te reo Māori one.

Its formal name was to be decided after community consultation.

More than 200 submissions wanted ‘‘memorial’’ in the name and most of those wanted Cromwell Memorial to be part of the name.

Cromwell Memorial Events Centre, or a version of that, proved to be the most popular by far.

The Junction was suggested by eight submitters and The Junction Centre by one, while The Confluence gathered two supporters.
