Crowd fund launches film

Another film is taking advantage of Central and North Otago's "beautiful but harsh and unforgiving'' landscape.

Independent movie Stray is set to be filmed in Cromwell, Alexandra, Luggate, Queenstown, Arrowtown and Otematata from early August to mid-September.

Associate producer Sez Niederer said it was a "compelling and unconventional love story of two damaged people''.

"In a cold and remote landscape, two strangers, a young man and a woman, find solace in each other as they struggle to repair their broken pasts.''

Producer, writer and director Dustin Feneley said he had always been inspired by the Central Otago landscape.

"At the same time it's beautiful but harsh and unforgiving.''

The crew would be no more than 20 people, including actors, he said.

After unsuccessfully applying for New Zealand Film Commission funding, Feneley appealed to the public through the crowdfunding site Boosted.

Just 13 days into the appeal he reached his initial goal of $75,000.

Hours before the 30-day campaign ended at midnight last night, $112,610 had been raised.

Sam Neill, arts patron Dame Jenny Gibbs and film producer Bridget Ikin are among its backers.

"It's really validating that the film is being supported by some really senior established names,'' Feneley said.

The film is set to be released late 2017.
