For speedway drivers Graham and Scott Williamson, there is no love lost behind the wheel.

Graham and son Scott are X Factor Racing saloon car team-mates and although supportive of each other's endeavours, both drivers enjoy competing against each other, Scott says.

''We get ready as a team and help each other out the best we can,'' he said.

''But when we hit the track we are competitive.''

It is the debut season in saloons for Scott, who previously competed in the modified sprint grade.

Graham has spent five seasons racing saloons after 30 years away from the sport.

With the family business securing a sponsorship of the Super Saloon Series out of Invercargill, Graham was drawn back to sport after a meeting with late speedway president Daryl Ainsley.

''[Daryl] talked me into buying his saloon when he went up into super saloons.''

Graham and wife Kate relocated to Cromwell and handed the keys of the business over to Scott.

Since returning to the speedway track, Graham has experienced success.

Last season he was Saloon Club Champ and was named Central Motor Speedway Competitor of the Year.

In more ways than one, Scott has followed on from where his father left off. Although he admits he still has ''his trainer wheels on'', the saloon car rookie says he has big goals.

''I would not mind being better than the old man by forging my own road.''

Both drivers were involved in the speedway triple-header on Saturday, which started the first of two days of racing in Cromwell.

A good-sized crowd was at Central Motor Speedway for round 4 of the Sprintcar War of the Wings, Christmas Champs and Southern Saloon Series.
