Didymmo control spray stations are to be set up for mountain
bikers competing in the inaugural Contact Epic cycle event around Lake Hawea.
Organiser Danielle Nicholson said the spray stations would be set up to stop the spread of didymo into waterways around Hunter Valley station.
The decision to set up the spray stations follows consultation with the Otago Regional Council.
Ms Nicholson said competitors would need to disinfect their shoes and bike wheels after crossing rivers.
The procedure was standard for large-scale ``wilderness'' events.
Ms Nicholson said it was important everyone involved in the race did their bit ``to lessen our impact on the environment''.
She was also pleased to announce that New Zealand endurance athlete and multisport legend Steve Gurney had entered in the 125km circumnavigation of Lake Hawea.
Gurney is a record nine-time winner of the Speight's Coast to Coast longest day race.
He is also a former celebrity participant in ballroom reality show Dancing With The Stars.
