Trying out a new take on the traditional rocking horse at the Earnscleugh Hall autumn market are brothers Cage (left), 6, and Jedd Stewart, 8, of Alexandra.

Crowds quickly snapped up the bargains, bought all the cheese rolls and made inroads on the barbecue on Sunday.

Hall committee chairwoman Angela McNaughton said they held the markets twice a year in spring and autumn. The hall body was an incorporated society and raised funds from the markets for hall maintenance.

All the stalls at the market were local vendors and some, including one from Balclutha, came to every market, she said.

A wide range of items, from dried flowers to pottery to knitting yarn, were available from the stall holders.

Outside the hall, Alexandra woodworker Owen Becroft had set up his animal planters and dog rockers, which attracted a lot of attention from children.

It was their attempts to sit on and in his planter boxes at markets that inspired him to make the rocking dogs, Mr Becroft said.
