A dog is missing after running from the scene of a single-vehicle crash on Monday morning.

Six-year-old white Maltese-Lhasa Apso-cross bitch Georgie was last spotted yesterday morning near the crash scene but went back into hiding before she could be found by owner Brenton Cook and a growing number of people who have joined in search efforts.

Mr Cook said he ran off the road between Alexandra and Roxburgh in the Fruitlands area. His vehicle hit a bank and then rolled.

He was knocked unconscious, and Georgie was gone when he came to.

Speaking from near the crash site yesterday, Mr Cook said local farmers joined him in looking for Georgie, whom he described as his ‘‘constant companion.’’

‘‘She will be be so frightened. She’s my best friend, my whole life. She means the world to me.’’

Mr Cook’s mother, Jackie Greenall, said her son was a Cromwell-based roofer and he took Georgie with him everywhere.

‘‘She is well-known, she is the little white dog that spends all day with BJ [Brenton] at work.’’

Her son was ‘‘taking it really badly’’, she said.

‘‘He’s 31, he has no kids, so it is no exaggeration to say she is his whole world.’’

Mrs Greenall said Georgie would be ‘‘absolutely terrified’’ and possibly spooked by vehicles.
