Part of State Highway 8 near Cromwell was closed because of yesterday's armed offenders squad call-out.
An armed offenders squad call-out to a domestic incident on a rural property between Cromwell and Tarras yesterday involved up to 20 police officers from Cromwell, Wanaka, Alexandra and Dunedin.

Acting Sergeant Philip Vink, of Cromwell, said police were called about 12.30am after reports of a firearm being discharged.

Part of State Highway 8, from the Deadman's Point Bridge intersection towards Tarras, was closed for up to three hours and re-opened about 9.30am.

Acting Sgt Vink said between 15 and 20 police attended the call-out and a man was taken into custody at 8.50am, without further incident.

A woman at the same property had received minor injuries, unrelated to the use of the firearm, he said.

A Cromwell man was remanded in custody after appearing in the Alexandra District Court yesterday, where he faced six charges arising from an incident near Cromwell yesterday morning.

The man, who was granted interim name suppression, appeared before Bob McNeil JP and was remanded to appear in the Dunedin District Court today.

He faced charges of threatening to kill, discharging a shotgun without reasonable excuse, illegally carrying a shotgun, intentionally destroying a garage door and two charges of assaulting a female.

Duty counsel Tim Cadogan said the charges were serious and he made no application for bail.

He asked for name suppression for the sake of the victims.

Police prosecutor Sergeant Ian Collin said police did not oppose name suppression.

Mr McNeil said the remand would be in custody because of the seriousness of the charges.
