Two arrests have been made for drink-driving after separate car crashes in Alexandra in the first 24 hours of the holiday weekend.
"We're disappointed about that and will continue to target drink-drivers throughout the weekend," Sergeant Ian Kerrisk said.
A 21-year-old Alexandra driver crashed into a building on the corner of Ashworth and Clutha Sts early yesterday morning. The building, which is used as a base for a community group, received "a reasonable amount" of damage to a concrete block wall, Sgt Kerrisk said.
The man was processed for drink-driving at the scene and will appear in the Alexandra District Court on May 4 to face a charge of drink-driving. His vehicle was damaged in the accident but the man was not injured, Sgt Kerrisk said.
A 38-year-old Oamaru man was arrested for drink-driving after allegedly accelerating his vehicle while going round a roundabout and hitting a power pole on the corner of Clutha St and Centennial Ave yesterday afternoon.
The passenger in the vehicle, a 44-year-old Alexandra woman, was admitted to Dunstan Hospital. Her injuries were not believed to be life-threatening, Sgt Kerrisk said.
The man will also face a charge of dangerous driving causing injury.
"There were a large number of people, including families, nearby when the accident happened so it was fortunate no pedestrians were hit, " Sgt Kerrisk said.
Drivers going too fast or too slow are annoying Central Otago police.
Two drivers were issued with infringement notices yesterday for travelling too slowly on the open road, between Fruitlands and Alexandra.
"They were holding up dozens of cars, driving well below the limit and causing bottlenecks which can lead to other drivers getting impatient and overtaking recklessly, " St Kerrisk said.
At the opposite end of the spectrum, more than 10 drivers had been ticketed for driving well over the speed limit, he said.
Many of those drivers were caught speeding in the Conroys Rd-Earnscleugh area.
