Alexandra has hosted this event for 63 years and is still going strong.
The event attracts competitors from overseas as well as those from within New Zealand, from those who are just starting out as novice competitors to those who are at the height of their careers.
Events like this do not happen by chance, they take enormous commitment by a relatively small committee who do so for the love of the sport and work all year round to make sure this event is world class.
We also are incredibly fortunate to have Bevan and Tiffany McKnight and their team at Northburn who provide us with an incredible line of merino sheep for the two days of competition. They go above and beyond to make sure that we are supplied with the best possible stock for this event.
Making this event possible is also a large list of sponsors and farmer grower donations. Many of these sponsors have been a part of this event for many years, and we are incredibly grateful for their support.
One of the prestigious shearing events in New Zealand, the PGG Wrightson Vetmed National Circuit has its first round at the Merino Shears. The semifinal and final for this will be hold at the Golden Shears World Shearing and Woolhandling Championships at Masterton in March 2026.
We welcome anyone to come along on the Friday and Saturday to watch the craftsmanship and skill of the competitors as they strive to make it from the heats through to the finals.
