An event combining candidates and pizza hopes to encourage young people to take an interest in politics and help provide guidance to young voters in October.

Puna Rangatahi manager Tash Kane said during the previous election, the organisation ran a speed dating-style event, but were changing things up this year.

Two weeks out from the event, six local politicians have said they will attend, including mayoral candidates Tamah Alley, Mark Quinn and Charlie Saunders, as well as members of the Vincent Community Board.

The relaxed event would allow young people to enjoy some pizza, watch the panel discussions and ask both mayoral and community board candidates questions about their policies and values.

For those not yet able to vote or interested in getting into politics themselves, there would be time to ask questions about how the council was run and what inspired the candidates to get involved in local politics.

Members of the Central Otago Youth Council would be running the evening and moderating the panel discussions.

Ms Kane said the previous speed dating-style was well received and while she was not with Puna Rangatahi then, she hoped this year’s event would be just as popular.

It was hoped the event would encourage young people to take a greater interest in politics as well as help them to understand it, developing their own opinions in the process, she said.

Pizza and Politics would be held at Central Cinema, October 8 at 6pm.
