Everyone invited to reopening of station

An opening date has been set for the restored Clyde Railway Station.

Promote Dunstan committee member Karin Bowen said a function to celebrate the reopening of the historic railway station would be held on October 10, and the whole community was invited.

About $90,000 was recently spent on urgent preservation work to restore the Heritage New Zealand category two building.

The work included replacing external timber damaged by water over the years and painting the outside of the building.

The project, including the conservation plan, was funded by Clyde Railway Station Steering Committee, Promote Dunstan, the Central Lakes Trust, Otago Community Trust and the Lottery Grants Board.

Further work on the inside will take place over the next five weeks.

Mrs Bowen said the event would celebrate the effort and hard work of the community to get the building restored.

''I think it's exciting in that [the restoration is] retaining a piece of the historical fabric of Clyde.''

Vincent Community Board chairwoman Clair Higginsonwill officially reopen the building at the October event.

The railway station will remain a transport hub - half of it a premises for rail trail operator Shebikeshebikes, and half of it a museum.

Promote Dunstan president Rory Butler said the museum would feature artefacts that were once a part of the working railway station, including uniforms, posters, a bicycle, and a station desk.

A large-scale model of the railway station, made by Clyde resident and model maker Bob Allen, would be a feature at the museum.
