Car admirers were in their element yesterday as the Pre '56 MG National Rally got its show on the road at Cromwell's Highlands Motorsport Park.

About 70 pre-1956 MG cars were on display as the 22nd edition of the biennial event cruised into Central Otago for the first time.

The scope of vehicles spanned an original 1931 MG M-type "Midget'' to a 1956 MG MGA.

Robert and Lynne Douglas, of Katikati, have owned their 1948 MG TC for 52 years and have travelled around the world in the treasured automobile.

"A fortnight after I got the car I found Lynne,'' Mr Douglas said. "We will never be parted. The three of us.''

Their first journey was a six-month trek through Australia spanning nearly 18,000km in 2001.

Six years later the pair travelled from Chile to Alaska on a tiki tour which covered two continents.

"We had to ship the car from Panama to Ecuador because there's no roads,'' he said.

Their journey included travelling over the Andes "five times''.

"[The MG] performed perfectly. At 11,000 ft.''

They narrowly avoided arrest when crossing the American-Alaskan border.

"Because we weren't processed correctly at the American-Mexican border, we got all the way to Alaska and didn't have the necessary paperwork,'' Mr Douglas said.

"A very enterprising Customs official had to re-classify our vehicle for it to get out of the States.''

Further road trips through Europe and Asia ensued before Mr and Mrs Douglas shipped their MG back home to New Zealand.

They estimated they had driven the car over 300,000 miles (482,800km).

The Pre '56 MG Rally event runs until Friday.
