Rebuilding the Roxburgh Entertainment Centre on an alternative site is one of the proposals being considered as the insurance settlement is finalised.

The Roxburgh Entertainment Centre project steering group met last week to review progress on the insurance settlement and consider a proposal to explore alternative locations for the new facility.

An indemnity insurance payout of about $4million is expected to be finalised soon, while negotiations for the final settlement continue.

The total sum insured for replacement of a for-like replacement for the entertainment centre is $6.4m.

Any improvements made beyond replacement cost will be funded separately.

The Roxburgh Entertainment Centre was destroyed by fire in early February.

Investigators could not determine the cause of the fire.

In August the Teviot Valley Community Board appointed a steering group of Sally Smith, Sarah Moore, David Weatherall and Alastair Monteath

to have an advisory role in the planning and design stages, providing community insight on hall use and performing arts needs and helping shape the project alongside council staff, architects and contractors.

The group will also assist in reviewing design proposals and representing community feedback at key stages, particularly during procurement and design development.

At the last meeting, the steering group said the rebuild was a once-in-a-generation opportunity for the Teviot Valley community.

To achieve that the group is considering whether the existing site is the most suitable.

Community members have suggested alternative sites that could help reinvigorate Roxburgh’s town centre and better meet the community’s long-term needs.

The steering group will report to the community board and the Central Otago District Council later in the month.

These reports will seek approval to formally investigate alternative location options.
